Earth Day 2024: Planet vs Plastic

Art work: @niceaunties ‘Auntlantis: Sweeping The Floor’

As we come together to celebrate Earth Day 2024, let's take a moment to reflect on a crucial issue that continues to threaten our planet: plastic pollution. This year’s theme, "Planet vs Plastic," resonates deeply with the urgent need to address the damage caused by our excessive use and disposal of plastic.

The statistics are staggering and serve as a wake-up call for all of us. Did you know that globally, over 300 million tons of plastic are produced every year, and approximately 8 million tons end up in our oceans? This plastic waste not only harms marine life but also finds its way into our food chain, posing serious health risks to humans and wildlife as it also infiltrates our soil, air, and food chain, impacting every corner of our planet. Research shows that by 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in our oceans if current trends continue.

Here at The Wild Remedy, we believe that awareness is the first step towards change. It’s time for individuals, businesses, schools, hospitals, governments—everyone—to reassess their everyday choices and contributions to plastic consumption. Each of us has a role to play in reducing our carbon footprint and plastic usage.

Imagine if every household committed to using reusable bags instead of single-use plastic bags, or if every business implemented measures to reduce plastic packaging. Small changes can lead to significant impact when multiplied across communities and industries.

Recently, I was inspired by the work of the Singaporean artists known as 'niceaunties' and their piece titled 'Auntlantis: Sweeping The Floor'. This artwork vividly depicts the gravity of our plastic problem, portraying a world submerged in plastic waste where individuals must sweep through the debris. It's a poignant reminder that our actions today determine the world we leave for future generations.

So, what can we do starting today? Here are a few practical steps:

  1. Reduce Single-Use Plastics: Opt for reusable alternatives such as water bottles, coffee cups, and shopping bags.

  2. Choose Sustainable Products: Support businesses that prioritise eco-friendly packaging and materials.

  3. Recycle Properly: Ensure that plastic waste is disposed of correctly and recycled whenever possible.

  4. Educate and Advocate: Spread awareness in your community and encourage others to join the movement.

  5. Support businesses that prioritise eco-friendly practices: who are committed to reducing their environmental impact.

The time for action is now. Each of us, irrespective of age or background, plays a pivotal role in reducing plastic consumption and our carbon footprint. Whether you're a child in school, a parent at home, an entrepreneur, or a decision-maker in a corporation or government, your choices matter.

What’s more, initiatives like "The Better Business Act" exemplify the transformative power of businesses in leading the charge towards a cleaner, greener, and fairer economy. By advocating for policies that encourage responsible corporate behaviour, we can foster a more sustainable future for all.

For UK schools eager to embrace this year's Earth Day theme, numerous organisations offer invaluable resources and support. Consider engaging with programs that promote sustainability education and empower students to become environmental stewards. Check out our community page for more information on our work with schools.

Remember, change begins with each of us. Let’s embrace this Earth Day as a catalyst for meaningful action. Together, we can create a healthier, cleaner planet for ourselves and future generations. Therefore, as we commemorate Earth Day 2024, let us commit to being stewards of our planet. Let us choose a future where plastic pollution is not the norm but a relic of the past. Our actions today will shape the world for generations to come.

Let’s make every day Earth Day and choose our planet over plastic.

With hope and determination,
