Girls In The Garden

Welcome to the 'Girls In The Garden' initiative, a transformative program launched by The Wild Remedy in collaboration with Association Bloomsbury Squares and Gardens and Camden Open Spaces. This project aims to create inclusive outdoor green spaces where girls and young women can thrive, connect with nature, and empower themselves and their communities.

About the Pilot Program

The 'Girls In The Garden' pilot has been an incredible journey so far, with four out of five workshops already completed. Each workshop has been designed to foster a sense of community, boost physical activity, and enhance educational experiences for girls and young women in our local neighbourhoods.

  1. Self-care with Nature at Brunswick Square Garden: This workshop introduced participants to the calming and rejuvenating benefits of nature using natural ingredients to create their own self-care products. Through mindful nature based activities, the girls learned the importance of self-care and the healing power of the natural world.

  2. Bee the Girl Power at Red Lion Square Garden- Bee Workshop: A buzzing success, this session combined environmental education with empowerment. Girls discovered the vital role bees play in our ecosystem while learning about teamwork and community building, drawing parallels between the cooperative nature of bee colonies and their own lives. The girls were able to plant wildflower seed pots and make clay friendship bracelets.

  3. Nature Printing at St Georges Garden: Creativity flourished as participants used natural materials including perennial flowers to create beautiful prints also known as ‘take zome’ a Japanese based craft. This hands-on workshop highlighted the beauty of nature and the joy of artistic expression, fostering a sense of accomplishment and connection to the environment.

  4. Picnic & Painting at Tavistock Square Garden: Blending relaxation with creativity, this workshop provided a serene setting for girls to enjoy a picnic while expressing themselves through painting. The open-air environment encouraged social interaction and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

  5. Midsummer Flower Crowns: Our grand finale, a celebration of creativity, sustainability, and community and Midsummer with a magical eco-friendly flower crown-making session. As we crafted crowns from fresh blooms, laughter and stories were shared, highlighting the bond that had formed among the participants over the weeks. The sight of girls and women adorned with beautiful flower crowns was a testament to the joy and community spirit we had cultivated.

Why 'Girls In The Garden'?

Research shows that access to green spaces significantly enhances physical and mental well-being, particularly for girls and women. However, safety concerns and a lack of inclusive programs often limit their participation. The 'Girls In The Garden' initiative addresses these issues by creating safe, supportive environments where young women can connect with nature and each other.

In our journal post, 'Empowering Girls and Women: Creating Inclusive Outdoor Greenspaces,' we delve into the importance of such initiatives. Girls and young women need spaces where they feel safe, valued, and inspired to engage with their surroundings. This pilot project has been designed with these principles at its core, aiming to break down barriers and open up new opportunities for personal and communal growth.
