Women’s Refuge Therapy Garden

We have recently started a project with local Women’s Aid to create a therapeutic garden space with weekly Ecotherapy garden sessions where women and children of the refuge who have escaped domestic violence, can create a space to relax, exercise, grow flowers and herbs and food. The women have been through very traumatic experiences and the project will support and empower them to rebuild their lives.

At the refuge we have some outdoor space that was not being used, it was uninspiring, completely bare with no plants or garden furniture and in need of more privacy for security and safety to create a place that they can take their minds off their traumatic experience.

The garden design and creation has been a collaboration between The Wild Remedy and the women and staff of the refuge, empowering women in decision making, confidence building and leadership skills in a holistic safe environment through gardening and ecotherapy activities.

Deciding on the planting and areas for seating for their garden has been through creative workshops this will include trips to other gardens for inspiration and horticultural workshops we deliver for the women and their children and refuge staff.

So far the project has been supported by various companies and funders including; Sarah Raven, Coir Products UK, Our Space Awards , Teaching Mums and others.
