Girls In The Garden- Nature Printing Workshop

Hello to all our Wild Remedy enthusiasts! I am so pleased to share an update on our inspiring series, "Girls In The Garden," which aims to connect girls with nature, fostering a sense of community and safety in their local parks and open spaces. Our latest workshop, the third of five, titled "Nature Printing," was a delightful success. Held on June 11th, 2024, at the serene St. George's Square Garden on Handel Street, London, this event was a beautiful blend of creativity, learning, and nature appreciation.

Nature Printing Workshop: A Creative Connection with Nature

In the lush surroundings of St. George's Square Garden, beneath the canopy of ancient trees and beside the enchanting terracotta Euterpe statue (the muse of music), a group of enthusiastic girls gathered for our "Nature Printing" workshop. The workshop was designed to introduce girls to the art of eco-printing, using a variety of perennial flowers to create unique prints on cotton tote bags.

Our display featured a colourful array of perennial flowers, including vibrant Marigolds, Petunias, Daisies, and Geraniums, all arranged in pots and a charming wheelbarrow. This vivid floral display immediately caught the eye of many passerby, who were drawn in by the colours and the inviting setup.

Hands-On Learning and Creativity

Participants, including members of the Fitzrovia Girls Club, MA Art History students, local workers, and curious passersby, were guided through the process of selecting flowers, arranging them on fabric, and using the flower pounding technique, also known as 'tataki zome'. This traditional Japanese method involves transferring the natural pigments of leaves and flowers onto fabric, resulting in beautiful, unique designs.

The hands-on style of the workshop allowed everyone to connect with nature in a tangible way. As they pounded flowers onto their tote bags, participants were not only creating art but also learning about the different types of flowers and their properties. The result was a collection of stunning, eco-friendly tote bags, each one a testament to the beauty of nature and the creativity of the participants.

Community Feedback and Reception

The feedback from our participants and passerby was overwhelmingly positive. Here are some of the wonderful comments we received:

  • "It was a therapeutic experience."

  • "This was really an enjoyable, such a good idea a relaxing experience."

  • "I would love to do more workshops."

  • "We learnt a new skill today and more about flowers and nature."

These heartfelt responses highlight the success of the workshop in not only teaching a new skill but also providing a relaxing and enjoyable experience in a beautiful natural setting.
